This month, I got to do something I’d never tried before as a wedding DJ: spin a wedding reception virtually, live from hundreds of miles away.
The bride was a friend of a close college friend — whose wedding I helped with years earlier, before I even launched my DJ business. This time, the couple had just a few days to reimagine their big day. For personal reasons, the couple decided to host a smaller, more intimate celebration with just a few close friends. But even with a scaled-back guest list, they wanted their night to feel joyful and unforgettable — and that meant having great music, smooth transitions, and hopefully some time on the dance floor.
She reached out with a playlist and a simple question:
“How can we make this flow together better?”
As someone who became a DJ because I love crafting seamless transitions, I was immediately excited to help!
A Creative Solution: Virtual Wedding DJ Services
At first, I suggested some quick fixes using Spotify’s crossfade feature — but that wouldn’t fully capture the energy they were hoping for.
So, I offered a bigger, crazier idea: live DJing remotely!
I would mix the reception live from my home studio, stream it to them in Texas via YouTube, and watch the room through a video call so I could read the energy and adjust the setlist in real time.
They loved the idea, even knowing there were a few technical risks. I got to work.
Preparing for a Virtual Wedding Reception
The couple had already assembled a great playlist filled with Latin hits, reggaeton favorites, and classic pop tracks. I took time to get familiar with the reggaeton songs they had chosen — most were new to me, but they quickly became some of my favorite tracks to mix. The bride also gave me a short list of “must-play” tracks, including their first dance song (“Perfect” by Ed Sheeran), and we discussed a couple of remixes to help one of her favorite songs (“Still Into You” by Paramore) feel more dance-floor friendly.
Technical Setup
To make this happen, I used:
- My regular DJ software and controller to mix the music
- OBS (Open Broadcaster Software) to manage the livestream
- YouTube to host the stream (as an unlisted private link)
- An external camera for a clearer view
- A handheld mic for announcements
On their end, they just needed:
- A stable internet connection
- A laptop or phone connected to a speaker (for the music)
- A second device for a video call (so I could see the room)
From First Dance to Final Track
Once everything was set up, the stream went live — and it worked better than I could have hoped!
After the first dance, I kicked off the night with some classic wedding favorites, then transitioned into a set of reggaeton tracks — including the couple’s requests and a few songs I’d handpicked to match their energy and keep the momentum going. This was easily my favorite part of the evening! Guests were laughing, trying out new dance moves together, and enjoying the moment.
Check it out!
Near the end of the evening, I hopped on the mic with a quick shoutout for any last requests — the bride called out “Macho Man,” so we closed out the night with it.
Navigating a Virtual Dance Floor
Not every moment was a full dance party, and that’s okay.
There was a stretch where guests were just hanging out and catching up — a natural vibe for a small, close-knit gathering. When dancing slowed, I adapted: switching genres, moving through songs a little faster, and mixing in a few slower tracks.
What I Learned From DJing a Virtual Wedding
This experience taught me so much about being a remote wedding DJ:
- Virtual DJing works with the right planning and tech!
- Reading the room over video is tricky, but absolutely possible!
- Tech hiccups happen, like some minor audio quirks I’ll fix for next time.
- Once the music starts, the nerves fade. I was anxious beforehand, but once I got in the zone, it was pure fun.
Most importantly, it reminded me that what matters is the experience — making sure the couple and their guests feel joyful, connected, and celebrated. 🙂
The feedback I received afterward made it all worth it:
“Thank you for contributing to my wedding, it was a good mix and a few people mentioned it too!!” — The bride
“Much fun, very happy, you contributed to a wonderful evening!” — Our mutual friend
Celebrating Your Way, Wherever You Are
Even though this was a unique setup, it reflects how I approach every wedding:
- Flexibility to support your specific vision
- Reliability and preparation to make sure everything runs stress-free
- Warmth and a little silliness to keep it light and joyful
- And most importantly, a focus on YOU and your perfect day 🙂
Whether you’re planning an in-person party, a hybrid event, or a fully virtual celebration, I’m here to help create a soundtrack that fits you.
